Hayward SP3015X202AZ Super II 2-Horsepower 2-Speed Pool Pump Review

This is an excellent pump for inground pool use. I purchased it to replace an aging similar (but single speed only) 1.5 HP Hayward Super Pump whose motor had burned up (literally; it actually caught fire and fortunately I observed it and tripped the breaker before further damage occurred to the surrounding equipment). I installed this replacement pump myself, including the 220 volt electrical installation portion (and note that this task is certainly not recommended except for qualified individuals; I'm a retired industrial control systems engineer). I (and Hayward Tech. Sup. also) highly recommend the use of a 30 amp min. GFCI breaker for this pump. A properly installed GFCI breaker would have prevented my former pump motor from burning up as it had experienced an undetected ground fault. If there is not such a GFCI breaker installed, then it should only be installed by a qualified electrician (I would not have considered performing this task). I hired an electrical contractor to install a GFCI breaker solely for this pump in my circuit breaker panel to prevent recurrence of the above-described incident.

The only suggestion I have is that the documentation is not very informative for this model. In particular there are no instuctions on how to wire it or how to use the various mounting options; which is a significant oversight in my opinion. There are 3 different mounting bases included; two of which interlock to form a tiered base and I choose to use that option since I needed to get the motor as far above ground level as possible to avoid water contact. I contacted Hayward about the wiring and the Tech. Sup. rep. with whom I spoke was very courteous & helpful. Subsequently I noticed that there is a tiny wiring diagram printed on the pump motor housing itself that would have answered most of my Q's.

BTW I am controlling this pump with an Intermatic Multiwave PE653RC Pool/Spa Control System that I also purchased from Amazon. I intend to eventually write a review on it as well--it could be a short story cause of all that I've learned. Suffice it to say that this controller is not intended to be either purchased or installed by non-qualified individuals--just figuring out what optional equipment must be purchased to enable its full functionality to be utilized is not straightforward.
