FaucetGrohe 32 644 EN1 Eurosmart Roman Tub Faucet with Personal Hand Shower, Infinity Brushed Nickel Finish Review
After using all Grohe fixtures in our guest shower-over-tub remodeling project, it was easy to choose this Grohe Roman tub set for the master bath. Little did I know, Nero was fiddling while this Roman faucet was being forged in Grohe's vunderfactorie.First, we were very impressed with the filler spout: my contractor was impressed (maybe even annoyed) with the spout's heftiness. That's one big chunk of very shiny solid brass! Eight-plus pounds of extremely elegant Starlight Chrome-coated solid brass, topped off with a ginormous ugly plastic diverter knob?! The diverter knob is incredibly cheesy, obviously out of place and lacking in any sense of craftsmanship or aesthetics. Plus, it doesn't work like it's supposed to. Every diverter mechanism I've ever used will reset to normal flow through the tub spout when the water is turned off. Not this set (or at least, not MY set). If you pull the diverter knob, the water will flow through the "personal hand shower". And it will keep flowing through the hand shower a week later when you turn the water back on -- unless you press the diverter knob back down. This operation is contrary to the manual, which means my unit is defective. Hard to believe with such a high-end item to have such an obvious manufacturing defect.
Now let's put on our dark goggles and take a look at this "personal hand shower". I've seen better plastic junk hand showers for sale at big-box retailers for less than $30. Not only is it cheap looking, but the washer in mine did not fit. My contractor had to trim the washer to screw the hose all the way into the handle. Perhaps that I could ignore, but the bizarre design of this cheap plastic piece is horrible. The hand grip attaches to the hose using another plastic piece which mates into the escutcheon which is mounted on the deck or tub. Problem is, the handle is rounded but the plastic adapter part is sharp-angled and doesn't match with the hand grip at all. My contractors and I were all looking at this thing, thinking it's got to be the wrong part. But when I go back and look very closely at the picture on amazon, I can see -- that's the way the thing is designed. Incredible. You don't notice it in the picture, but in real life it sticks out like a sore thumb.
Due to delays in remodeling, we didn't get this part installed until after Amazon's 30-day return window expired, so I am stuck with a VERY expensive fixture which is, for me, junk. I will order the twin Grohe set without "personal hand shower", find something to cover the third hole in my custom granite deck, and put this one on the classifieds or craigs list.
