I have wanted a overhead blade cover for my table saw for a long time but the price of these things is a big deterrent, I could buy more fun stuff with that much money. My other concern is, on the right side of my saw I cut a hole in the table for my shaper which I use also as a router table. We are always searching for ways to use our precious shop space wisely. The typical overhead blade guards mount on the far right of the table saw and the mast that supports them would be in the way for my setup. I know they will rotate out of the way but you still have the post on the end that would interfere with large pieces of stock. Excalibur and Exaktor both make ceiling mount versions but they are very difficult to find. After a lot of searching I was able to special order one (Excalibur). It costs substantially less than the horizontal pipe version but you do have to fabricate some sort of ceiling mount setup. I used 2 x 6 lumber but I also constructed it in such a way it can be swung up out of the way if necessary. It was very easy to do this and it works great! When ripping stock there is no noticeable dust anywhere. When you cross-cut stock with a miter gauge, if the stock is relatively thick (over 1") you may get some dust. The sides must be relatively close to the material and thicker stock that doesn't seal the entire cover well such as say cross-cutting a 2 X 2 will reduce the vacuum strength. I have a 3 HP dust collector but you would not need one this big for this application.
Overall I am very satisfied with the Excalibur blade cover. It is well made, works good, raises up effortlessly when pushing stock through. I don't have any experience with any other brands though to compare it to. My model (ceiling mount version) is the same cover as the standard model shown here but without the mast assembly, it also has mounting brackets for ceiling mount applications. I think the ceiling mount version is worth a look, it's cheaper and is very easy to mount and gives you more options as well.
If you want this model you can order it from any Excalibur dealer, I ordered mine from tools-plus.com. It's made by General International. The model Number is: 50-EXBC-CM10 for a 10" saw and 50-EXBC-CM14 for 14" saws. Web page: [...]
